Getai is a mini variety show performed during religious events which brandishes comedy skits performed by amateur actors and contemporary Mandarin songs. It had mimicked those popular Mandarin television programmes in the 1960s that featured an eclectic mix of engaging performances.

Getai performances grew in tandem with local television and became a popular consumerist culture that supplanted Chinese street opera as the mainstream form of entertainment.
